Ryerson Image Centre opens with a flourish: inaugural exhibitions now on view to the public

The Ryerson Image Centre officially opened to the public with a spectacular display of light, colour, and photography-related art.

On Saturday night, more than 3,500 people came to see the Ryerson Image Centre's inaugural exhibitions and program the lights on the exterior of the building from their smart phones.

The Black Star Collection of approximately 292,000 black and white photographs is one of the world’s most significant collections of photojournalism.

Tracing the social and political history of the 20th century, the iconic images were gifted to Ryerson University by an anonymous donor.

The Collection now makes its home at the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC), Toronto's newest cultural destination, opening September 29, 2012.

Ryerson Image Centre opens The Art of The Archive inaugural exhibition

The Art of the Archive is one of the inaugural exhibitions heralding the arrival of the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC), Toronto’s newest public gallery.

All the emerging artists involved are students or recent alumni associated with Ryerson’s School of Image Arts.

The exhibition includes works by Alyssa Bistonath, Kyle Brohman, Julia Callon, Jenna Edwards, Tara Ernst, Daniel Froidevaux, Elisa Gilmour, Ben Lenzner, Marc Losier, Eugen Sakhnenko, Kate Tarini, and Andrew Williamson.

Toronto’s newest art gallery, the Ryerson Image Centre, opens on September 29th with an exhibition showcasing a first rate selection of leading Canadian contemporary artists: Stephen Andrews, Christina Battle, Marie-Helene Cousineau, Stan Douglas, Vera Frenkel, Vid Ingelevics, David Rokeby and Michael Snow.

Archival Dialogues: Reading the Black Star Collection features new work from eight extraordinary artists, commissioned and created for the grand opening of the Ryerson Image Centre.

Each artist has interacted with the legendary Black Star Collection at Ryerson University, a world-renowned archive of historic black and white photojournalism and one of the most valuable repositories of collective global memory captured in visual form.

Toronto's new public downtown art gallery opens this weekend

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC), the latest addition to Canada’s gallery landscape and Toronto’s newest cultural destination, opens its doors this Saturday, September 29.

The grand opening marks the establishment of an innovative arts centre dedicated to collecting, research and public exhibition of photography and related arts, including new media, installation art and film.

The Ryerson Image Centre is located in the heart of downtown Toronto and at the core of Ryerson University’s urban campus.

Berenice Abbott: Photographs exhibition, conference and catalogue launch

In celebration of Berenice Abbott: Photographs opening May 2012 at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), the public is invited to attend the major exhibition, a special catalogue launch event, and a one-day conference.

Berenice Abbott: Photographs is the first retrospective of Abbott’s work.

The exhibition is co-organized by the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) and the Jeu de Paume in Paris, and curated by Dr. Gaelle Morel, the first curator of the Ryerson Image Centre.

Presented in partnership with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), it will be on view at the AGO from May 23 to August 19, 2012.

The exhibition opening on Wednesday May 23 is free to attend after 6:00 p.m. Public remarks will be at 6:45 p.m. in the gallery space.

Retrospective exhibition of celebrated photographer Berenice Abbott on view in Paris and Toronto

The Ryerson Image Centre (Toronto) and the Jeu de Paume (Paris) have co-organized the exhibition Berenice Abbott: Photographs, the first retrospective of the American photographer, Berenice Abbott, presented in France and Canada.

Curated by Dr. Gaelle Morel at the Ryerson Image Centre, Berenice Abbott: Photographs will be on view in Paris from February 20 to April 29, 2012, and the exhibition is being presented in Toronto at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) from May 23 to August 19, 2012, in partnership with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival and the AGO.
